What better way to get pumped for Masterchef Live on Saturday then cakes and macaroons and sweets!
Every so often my one-day-hopefully-sister-in-law and her other half come to visit for the weekend, and I finally got to take them to Adriano Zumbo’s patisserie in Manly.
I think its hard for people not insanely obsessed with food to understand the excitement I feel when I I get to bite into a macaroon, with its crisp delicate shell and its chewy bursting with flavour inners.
*sigh*
I literally can’t wait to see the sweets masterclass with Adriano Zumbo, is it a bit crazy that I’ve thought if I get the chance to meet him that I might get him to sign my shoes?
Yeah shoes might be a bit of a stretch! Maybe I’ll take along my Jessie Steele apron and get all the celeb chefs – and other food bloggers if I meet any of you! – to sign instead.
I must say to all fellow food lovers and all those that just like to take a stroll and gander at my ramblings and recipes, thank you. Every viewer that puts a smile on my face and every blog I read is an inspiration to me.
But on to the sweets! Its so easy to get carried away in the small patisserie. You could almost miss the entrance if you weren’t peering over the steering wheel holding up traffic, in a panic because you had it in your head that if you didn’t get there early that they would miraculously sell out of every macaroon, every sweet little morsel that you had you heart set on and then you would have to wait until another day.
I believe we may have bought 2 of every macaroon flavour they had there that day.
I can try and name them all but please forgive me if I can’t remember! There’s so many and I got a bit overwhelmed by the outrageous tastes!
Burnt Butter, Chocolate, Licorice & Black Sesame, Salted Caramel, Strawberry & Cream, Vanilla Bean and Mint.
Above is the pandan cake, I believe it had a funky name like “Dan the Pandan Man”
The smell of pandan is one I find very difficult to explain to those that have never smelt it, its so sweet but slightly nutty taste. I wish I could tell you what the white coating was but I can’t, it was like nothing I had experienced on food before.
Chocolate with Raspberry surprise? I believe?
As you can see, the inside is as breath taking as a small cake can be. Just thinking about the time and care it takes to create such a miniature masterpiece, well, it makes me appreciate it while eating even more.
Also, if you check out Adriano Zumbo’s site currently you can preorder a signed copy of his new book which comes out in stores early October. Or browse the site and check out the menus with all his crazy magnificent sweets in stores at the moment!
So whats the most delicious sweet you’ve had so far in your life? And do you have crazy thoughts like having idols and celebs signing your shoes?
Peace out! and I hope your work day goes fast!
xx
whoa the chocolate and strawberry surprise is indeed a masterpiece! and i've had so many great sweets in my life i can't figure which one's the best lol
Oh yes the aroma of pandan is really distinctive isn't it and so hard to describe! It reminds me of coconut, not the smell itself but I suppose whenever I have it I have it with coconut!
@Irene
I always find it difficult to pick my favourite foods!
Haha great answer
@Lorraine
It does remind me of coconut too, I'm glad I'm not the only one that finds it hard to describe
whoa i had no idea he opened another store! i can't wait to see his book. if it's anything like his sweets it'll be full of wacky deliciousness!
Have you bought his cookbook? I saw it in a bookshop on the weekend but hesitated because I'm not sure I could do his work justice.
@Cathy
I saw his book for the first time on the weekend. It's amazing!
@Hotly Spiced
I didn't buy his cookbook on the weekend, I have alot at home I haven't read yet. But my friend did and its amazing. A couple of the recipes look really involved but I'd say having a quick flick through, it has easy recipes and more involved recipes. I think you should give it a go! You might have a great knack for it!

So many macaroons there! I want to try the burnt butter one.
Just discovered pandan and coconut ice cream recently, so the cake looks like a must try for me. And I've made a choc mousse with a raspberry surprise – is he copying me?? Haha
I can't wait till he opens at the casino, much closer to us than any other stores.
it's so great seeing all these cakes in their perfect form and then getting a peak at their luscious insides- it's made me all h-angry for dessert!!
